Athmiya: 'I Play A Sri Lankan Refugee In Kaaviyyan'

Ask her the reason for staying away from the industry for nearly five years and  she says, “It was not intentional. As I come from a non-filmy background, I didn’t have proper guidance on what projects I should take up after my debut. In fact, I never expected Manam Kothi Paravai will do well. I am happy that people here recognise me for the role I did years ago.”

However, Athmeya says that she had confined herself to Malayalam films. “I was a part of two Malayalam films. Though one of the films didn’t have a theatrical release, it won the Kerala state award for its off-beat content. Moreover, I also had plans to pursue my higher studies abroad as my sister lives there. That is another reason for missing out on a lot of opportunities.”

The actress recently completed shooting for a film, Kaaviyyan, which has Shaam in the lead. “I play a Sri Lankan refugee in the film, and we shot major portions of it in the US. The film is an action-thriller, and it will be released in both Tamil and Telugu. I became quite excited when the team shot for action sequences, as they wanted to try something new. Stunt Siva has done an amazing job, and I am sure the film will go well with the audience.”

On her upcoming film with Samuthirakani, directed by Subramaniam Siva, she says, “I am playing a village girl in the film, which is completely in contrast to the role I play in Kaaviyyan. It’s an agriculture-based film, which has an important message for people. We shot most of the portions in the interiors of Tiruvannamalai. I have a lot of expectations on this one as well.”
